How cumulative GPA is calculated

Your cumulative GPA is the credit-weighted average of every graded class you have taken. To update it, you do not need every old grade. You only need your current cumulative GPA and the number of credits it covers. Both are on your transcript or student portal.

New cumulative GPA = (current GPA × credits so far + this term's grade points) ÷ (credits so far + this term's credits)

Example

You have a 3.20 GPA over 45 credits. This semester you take 15 credits and earn a 3.80.

  1. Previous grade points: 3.20 × 45 = 144
  2. This term's grade points: 3.80 × 15 = 57
  3. Total: (144 + 57) ÷ 60 = 3.35

Notice that a strong semester moves the cumulative GPA only part of the way, because the earlier credits still count.

Why averaging term GPAs is wrong

Averaging a 3.0 semester and a 4.0 semester gives 3.5 only if both semesters had the same number of credits. If the 3.0 semester had 18 credits and the 4.0 semester had 12, the real cumulative GPA is (54 + 48) ÷ 30 = 3.40. Always weight by credits.

How fast can I raise my GPA?

The more credits you have completed, the slower your GPA moves. Raising a 2.8 to 3.0 takes far fewer A grades after 30 credits than after 90. Try it above: enter your current GPA and credits, then add the grades you expect this term.
