Cum laude, magna cum laude and summa cum laude are graduation honors based mostly on GPA. The cutoffs differ by college, but most fall in a similar range.

Fixed cutoffs vs. class rank

Colleges use one of two systems:

Some schools add extra requirements such as a senior thesis, a minimum number of credits taken at the school, or no disciplinary record.

How to check if you are on track

  1. Find your current cumulative GPA and completed credits on your transcript.
  2. Look up your college's honors cutoffs in the catalog.
  3. Use the cumulative GPA calculator to test which grades you need in your remaining semesters.

Do Latin honors matter?

Latin honors appear on your diploma and transcript and are a quick signal of strong academic performance. They can help on a resume early in your career and in graduate school applications. Their weight fades as you gain work experience.
