GPA Converter
Convert a percentage to a letter grade and GPA points, or a GPA back to a percentage.
How the conversion works
Percentages convert to GPA through letter grades. A percentage first maps to a letter (93% is an A, 85% a B), and the letter maps to grade points on the 4.0 scale. This converter uses the most common US cutoffs:
| Percentage | Letter | GPA points |
|---|---|---|
| 97-100 | A+ | 4.0 |
| 93-96 | A | 4.0 |
| 90-92 | A- | 3.7 |
| 87-89 | B+ | 3.3 |
| 83-86 | B | 3.0 |
| 80-82 | B- | 2.7 |
| 77-79 | C+ | 2.3 |
| 73-76 | C | 2.0 |
| 70-72 | C- | 1.7 |
| 67-69 | D+ | 1.3 |
| 63-66 | D | 1.0 |
| 60-62 | D- | 0.7 |
| below 60 | F | 0.0 |
Some schools use a 10-point scale instead (90-100 = A, 80-89 = B). If your syllabus shows different cutoffs, those apply.
Converting a GPA back to a percentage
There is no exact formula, because many percentages share one letter grade. The converter shows the percentage range of the nearest letter grade. For an official percentage, use the conversion your school publishes.
Converting an average percentage to GPA
If you have several class percentages, convert each class to its letter grade first, then calculate the GPA from the letters with the GPA calculator. Converting the overall average percentage directly can give a different result, because grade points are not evenly spaced.
