GPA Scale and Conversion Chart
How letter grades and percentages map to grade points on the standard 4.0 scale, with weighted values for honors and AP classes.
Standard 4.0 GPA scale
| Letter grade | Percentage | 4.0 scale | Honors (+0.5) | AP / IB (+1.0) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 97-100 | 4.0 | 4.5 | 5.0 |
| A | 93-96 | 4.0 | 4.5 | 5.0 |
| A- | 90-92 | 3.7 | 4.2 | 4.7 |
| B+ | 87-89 | 3.3 | 3.8 | 4.3 |
| B | 83-86 | 3.0 | 3.5 | 4.0 |
| B- | 80-82 | 2.7 | 3.2 | 3.7 |
| C+ | 77-79 | 2.3 | 2.8 | 3.3 |
| C | 73-76 | 2.0 | 2.5 | 3.0 |
| C- | 70-72 | 1.7 | 2.2 | 2.7 |
| D+ | 67-69 | 1.3 | 1.8 | 2.3 |
| D | 63-66 | 1.0 | 1.5 | 2.0 |
| D- | 60-62 | 0.7 | 1.2 | 1.7 |
| F | below 60 | 0.0 | 0.0 | 0.0 |
The weighted columns follow the most common rule. Some schools give AP classes +0.5 or use a 5.0 scale for all advanced classes, so check your school's policy.
The 4.33 variant
A few colleges count an A+ as 4.33 instead of 4.0, and some use +/- steps of 0.33 (B+ = 3.33, B- = 2.67). The difference is small for most students, but it can matter at the top of the range.
What does my GPA mean?
| GPA | Letter average | Roughly |
|---|---|---|
| 3.7-4.0 | A- to A | Top grades; competitive for selective colleges |
| 3.3-3.6 | B+ to A- | Strong; meets most scholarship minimums |
| 3.0-3.2 | B | Solid; common admission minimum |
| 2.0-2.9 | C to B- | Passing; 2.0 is often the minimum to stay in good standing |
| below 2.0 | below C | Academic probation at many schools |
Converting a GPA to a percentage
There is no single official formula, because schools use different cutoffs. A rough guide: 4.0 is about 93-100%, 3.0 about 83-86%, 2.0 about 73-76%. If an application asks for a percentage, use the conversion your school publishes.
